OVERVIEW

This site was created as part of a sabbatical project for College of the Redwoods, Eureka, California. Math instructors often feel we have little time to find historical or cultural information for their classrooms. In addition, we aren't sure we can find class time to do incorporate these materials. Textbooks, responding to standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, have incorporated historical items in algebra and calculus texts. However, students are not likely to value or remember these items unless teachers breath life into them.

Therefore, the resources used in this site are meant to be introductory, interesting, easy to access, quick to read, and appealing to many levels of community college students. Any math class could benefit from materials in the site, but site materials are intended to be used in algebra and calculus classes, rather than survey courses. If you are really, really short on time, look at the resources with A FAVORITE rating.

By using these resources and ideas, you can actually save time because your students will be more interested and motivated. Also, don't be put off by the "introductory" nature of the materials; more often then not, they will lead to additional faculty and student research.
