Biology (biol) Transfer Information

For students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or unviersity, the following College of the Redwoods courses are those which must be completed in order to fulfill the lower-division major requirements in the institution/major field of study specified.

BIOL 3, 4, 5; CHEM 1A, 1B; PHYS 2A, 2B

B.S. Biology, B.S. Botany, BS Zoology
BIOL 3, 4, 5; CHEM 1A; PHYS 2A are the core courses required for all three degrees. However, there may be additional requirements depending upon the option selected. Some of the classes are MATH 15, 25, 30, 50A, 50B; PHYS 2A, 4A, 4B; GEOL 1; AG 17, 18; and OCEAN 10 and 11.

General Biology is an introductory course in life science, emphasizing the unifying principles of biology. Applications of biological concepts to current human issues are also considered. Note: Required of pre-nursing majors. Not open to students who have completed or who are currently enrolled in BIOL 3. Non-science majors should also see BIOL 8, BIOL 10, BIOL 15 and ENVSC 10.

Microbiology

Recommended preparation: BIOL 1
A study of the kinds of and methods of identifying microorganisms, their anatomy, physiology, genetics, and ecological importance. Emphasizes the role of microorganisms in disease and the mechanisms of host resistance to disease. Laboratory work emphasizes the importance of aseptic techniques, methods of control, procedures for isolating and culturing, and methods used in identifying microorganisms.

Fundamental Cell Biology

This course studies the fundamental structure and function of cells including consideration of all eucaryotic cell organelles, reproduction, genetics and evolution.

This course provides an introduction to human anatomy. It includes the study of the gross and microscopic structure of all the organ systems of the human body with special emphasis on the relationship between structure and function. Laboratory work includes the study of human cadavers.

Human Physiology

This course provides the student with an introduction to human physiology. Included is a study of the function of all the organ systems of the body. Special emphasis is given to the role of each system in regulating and maintaining bodily homeostasis.

This is an introduction to the field of plant taxonomy. Emphasis is placed on keying species using A California Flora. Lecture material covers introductory concepts in plant taxonomy and characteristics of the common flowering plant families in California. Lab time is spent learning sight identification of families and keying out local plants. Field trips (the College does not provide transportation) are taken to local wildflower areas. An introduction to the identification, life histories, evolution, behavior, anatomy, physiology and ecology of marine mammals., emphasizing the pinnipeds. This course focuses on training people to work in marine mammal centers. Through lab experiences with live mammals, as well as field trips (the College does not provide transportation), students will learn about methods of treatment for the mammals brought to the centers.
