April 3rd, 11:30 AM, CR Campus
Talitha Stimson, Engineer, Caltrans
Talitha Stimson, a College of the Redwoods graduate currently working in Caltrans Design as the Project Engineer for the Confusion Hill project, will give a presentation entitled, Confusion Hill: Engineering a Solution. The talk begins at 11:30 am in the Physical Science building, room PS113, and will conclude by 12:30 pm. A short description of the talk follows.
Confusion Hill: Engineering a Solution is a presentation about the development of a project to improve the reliability of Highway 101 through the Confusion Hill slide area. Frequent road closures due to slides and slope movement have been a growing maintenance problem over the years.
- In the winter of 2001, the cost to stabilize the roadway was $3.2 million and estimated costs of vehicle delays were $665,000.
- In the winter of 2002/03, stabilization costs exceeded $9 million and vehicle delay costs were estimated near $2 million.
- This winter Caltrans is expecting maintenance costs to again exceed $9 million.
The presentation will explain why a bypass of the slide is necessary, how the current design solution was developed, and what the proposed roadway and bridges will look like.
